The right man was on patrol at the right time late last month, as Westchester County Police Officer Scott Forsythe - who happens to own ducks and chickens at his home - responded to a call on Main Street, where there were two ducklings trapped in a storm drain.
With an assist from the Mount Kisco Department of Public Works and the Mount Kisco Fire Department, Forsythe was able to rescue the ducks from the drain, though it took more than an hour to coerce them out of their temporary home.
Forsythe placed the ducklings in an open top box, hoping to reunite them with their mother, who never returned. After nearly two hours, when a cat started sniffing around, Forsythe took the Wood Ducks home.
The officer provided a temporary home for the ducklings - dubbed Kisco and Copper - before turning them over to a local, licensed waterfowl rehabilitation expert at the Trevor Zoo in Millbrook. Police said that they will be raised with other rescued ducks who are around the same age, before they are eventually released back into the wild.
